Almost One-Third of Adult Population Plays Caregiving Role

March 25th, 2010

Caregiving is still mostly a woman’s job, and many women put their careers and financial futures on hold as they juggle part-time caregiving and full-time job responsibilities. That’s the reality reported in the new report, “Caregiving in the U.S. 2009.”

The study found that 29 percent of the U.S. adult population, or 65.7 million people, are caregivers for adults, the elderly and children with special needs, including 31 percent of all households. Those caregivers provide an average of 20 hours of care per week.

Study Links Social Isolation with Health Risks in Elderly

March 16th, 2010

While not having many close friends contributes to poorer health for many older adults, those who also feel lonely face even greater health risks. This new study found that older people who are able to adjust to being alone don’t have the same health problems.

This University of Chicago study is the first to examine the relationships between health and the two different types of isolation. Researchers measured the degree to which older adults are socially connected and socially active. They also looked at whether they felt lonely and whether they expect friends and family would help them in times of need.
